Welcome back, students and faculty. We hope you had an enjoyable and safe summer.  

We look forward to a productive and exciting school year! Many new and exciting programs and events are planned for a great 2018/2019 school year!

WELCOME BACK LETTER 2018 – 2019 August 2018, Dear Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  This is an exciting time as we anticipate a happy and successful year for all of our middle school students. You will find enclosed a form with notification of your child’s homeroom.  It is important that you share this information with your child, so he/she knows where to report on the first day of school. All class schedules will be distributed in homeroom on September 5th and are not included in this mailing.

School will reopen after on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.    There will be one-session day (8:30 A.M.-12:54 P.M.) on Wednesday, September 5th.  The Breakfast program at the Middle School begins on September 8th and runs every day throughout the year.  Students are permitted to enter the building for breakfast at 8:05 a.m. each day.  Only students who are wearing the school ID will be permitted to enter for breakfast as the ID is essential for reporting to the state.

Students who are not coming in for breakfast will be permitted to enter the building at 8:20 a.m.

Any form that requires a signature should be returned to the homeroom teacher by September 17th.  Your prompt attention to returning the forms in a timely manner is greatly appreciated. 

Please be aware that we are no longer sending home a hard copy of the Middle School calendar. The calendar can be found on the Middle School website and will be updated monthly. The Middle School policies and procedures, including our school discipline policy and point system, can also be found on the school website as well as in the student planners. You are required to review the policies with your child and return the acknowledgement form that is found in the front of the handbook with your signature as well as the signature of your child by September 17th.

Back to School Night will be held on the evening of September 26th. Kindly mark the date on your calendar. You will also find enclosed a handout with important upcoming events.  It is very important that you check our school website for information and upcoming events at www.gboe.org. Click on the picture of the Middle School for direct access to our webpage.

8TH GRADE FAILURES ANNOUNCEMENT: Dear 8th Grade Students, Parents & Guardians:

The Garfield Middle School Staff welcomes you for the 2018-2019 school year. The Garfield Middle School Staff has worked to present an exciting and challenging educational opportunity for your child during their final year at Garfield Middle School. We encourage you to be involved in your child’s education. Research shows that parent involvement is highest on the list of factors contributing to a student’s success. Our goal is to provide the best educational program possible for your child, and with your involvement, ensure that your child will be successful.

Extracurricular activities exist to provide educational experiences not otherwise provided to our students in academic courses. However, parents, guardians and students must be mindful that extracurricular activities are not a student right, but a privilege. While we at GMS believe that extracurricular activities are an essential part of education, academics and attendance take precedence.

This letter is to inform you that any 8th grade student who is being retained due to course failure, must attend summer school as well as failure identified for excessively absent/tardiness from school, will result in your child being excluded from the following extracurricular activities:

  • 8th Grade Graduation Dinner Dance
  • 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony

Participation in the 8th Grade Graduation Dinner Dance and Graduation Ceremony is a privilege. To participate, students must be passing all courses without having to attend summer school.  Throughout the school year, you are encouraged to review your child’s progress regularly via Parent Portal. In February, parents and guardians will be notified of students who are at-risk for failure and possible retention. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s academic progress, please contact your child’s School Counselor, Mr. Brian Platt at ext. 3297.

SCHOOL FUNDRAISER ANNOUNCEMENT:  Dear Parents/Guardians- Our biggest fundraiser of the school year is our Fall Raffle Sale.  We are asking that every family participates and sells the ten raffles.  All monies ($10) are due by November 19, 2018. By participating in the Raffle Sale, you will automatically become a member of our Home and School Association and the $5 membership will be considered paid.

Our goal is to sell 10,000 tickets by the drawing on December 18, 2018.  There will be three prizes awarded:  an tablet 55” flat screen TV; and $100 gift card. There will also be three prizes of $20 gift cards awarded to the families that sell the winning tickets.  Proceeds from the Raffle sale are used to support our Student Rewards Program at GMS.

It is our hope that all families participate in this fundraiser. If every family sells just one book, we will reach our goal of selling 10,000 tickets!  We need your support to make this a success for our students and for our School.   Thank you in advance for your participation!

 A form will be giving to your child to sell a book of raffles, once the form is signed, the raffle book will be sent home with your child on October 1st.
